How to make a contribution

Starting early and making small contributions to your super can really add up over the long term. You can make a once off lump sum contribution at any time or to make it easier on the pocket, you can make smaller regular contributions just like you may already be doing with your savings account.

There are a couple of ways you can make contributions

  1. Salary sacrifice is where you 'sacrifice' take-home pay, which your employer instead pays into your super account. As this contribution is taken out of your before-tax pay it is not taxed at your marginal rate but at a reduced rate of 15% when received by the super fund. Making salary sacrifice contributions can reduce your taxable income, and may result in lower income tax over all. If you are considering making salary sacrifice contributions you should talk to a qualified financial adviser and make the necessary arrangements with your employer.
  2. Personal contributions (sometimes called non-concessional contributions) are taken from your after-tax pay and are not taxed either when paid into your super account or when withdrawn when you retire. You can make personal contributions by Direct Debit, BPAY or cheque.

Making a personal contribution is easy. Simply:

BPAY

Use telephone or internet banking and BPAY to:

Biller Code: 40865
BPAY Reference Number: Is on your member card or available by calling Member Services on 1300 361 477.

Send a cheque

Set up a Direct Debit

If you make a personal contribution and your taxable income is less than $61,920 (in the 2009/10 financial year) and you meet a few other conditions you may be eligible for a top up payment from the Government called the co-contribution.
